Potassium is used in maintaining cellular fluids. It governs enzymatic reactions taking place in the body’s system and is used for nerve control and impulse, muscular contractions, the release of hormones and the conversion of glucose to glycogen.

Potassium is important for chemical reactions within the cells and aids in maintaining stable blood pressure and in transmitting electrochemical impulses. It also regulates the transfer of nutrients through cell membranes. This function of potassium has been shown to decrease with age, which may account for some of the circulatory damage, lethargy, and weakness experienced by older people.

Sodium and potassium must maintain a state of equilibrium. When either is dramatically altered the entire body function is disturbed. In light of the sodium/potassium balance, it is recommended that high doses of potassium not be taken for long periods of time. Increased magnesium will release potassium that has been stored in soft tissue. Potassium supplementation should be administered in cases of deficiency.
